Prices move before headlines. If you want to know what is happening in the world right now, prediction market prices are faster, more honest, and more calibrated than any other public signal.
If you want to know what is happening in the world right now — not what happened yesterday, not what might happen someday, but what is actively unfolding — the best data source is not a news feed. It's a price.
Specifically, it's the price of a prediction market contract.
What a Price Actually Encodes
A prediction market contract on "Will the US impose new sanctions on Iran by April?" trading at 73 cents is not an opinion. It's a $73 bet by someone with money at risk that this event will happen. And the person on the other side — the one selling at 73 — is betting $27 that it won't.
This is fundamentally different from a poll, a pundit's forecast, or a headline. Here's why:
Polls aggregate uninformed opinions. Most people answering "Do you think sanctions will happen?" have spent zero minutes researching the topic. Their answer is free to give and carries no cost for being wrong.

Speed: Prices Move Before Headlines
When the Iranian foreign minister makes a statement at a press conference, here's the typical information cascade:
- Traders react (seconds to minutes). They've been watching the livestream, monitoring X, or have sources. The price moves.
- Wire services file (5-30 minutes). AP, Reuters, AFP put out a headline.
- News outlets publish (30-120 minutes). Analysis, context, quotes from experts.
- Aggregators index (hours). Google News, Apple News, RSS feeds update.
If you're reading the news, you're seeing the world on a 30-minute to 2-hour delay. If you're watching the price, you're seeing it in real time.
This isn't theoretical. During the 2024 US election, prediction market prices moved minutes before any news outlet called races. During geopolitical crises, contract prices on Kalshi and Polymarket have consistently front-run wire service reports.
Calibration: Prices Are Honest
A contract trading at 70 cents should resolve "yes" about 70% of the time. This is called calibration — the match between stated probability and actual outcome frequency.
Research consistently shows that prediction markets are well-calibrated. Not perfect. But significantly better than expert forecasts, polls, or model-based predictions.
Why? Because miscalibration is a profit opportunity. If a contract is trading at 50 cents but the true probability is 70%, anyone who notices can buy and expect a 20-cent profit. This buying pressure pushes the price toward the correct level. The market self-corrects.
No editorial board self-corrects. No poll methodology self-corrects. No pundit's mental model self-corrects. Prices do.
Completeness: Everything Has a Price
Prediction markets cover an extraordinary range of world events:
- Geopolitics: Will the US send troops? Will a ceasefire hold? Will sanctions be imposed?
- Economics: Will the Fed cut rates? Will inflation exceed 3%? Will unemployment rise?
- Politics: Who wins the election? Will a bill pass? Will a cabinet member resign?
- Climate: Will a hurricane make landfall? Will global temperature records be broken?

No news organization covers this breadth with this granularity. No polling firm updates this frequently. No forecasting model is this responsive to new information.
What This Means for Agents
If you're building an AI agent that needs to understand the current state of the world, prediction market data is the highest-signal input you can provide.
Instead of parsing articles and extracting sentiment, your agent can read a single number: the price. That price already incorporates the articles, the sentiment, the insider knowledge, and the risk assessment — filtered through the incentive structure of real money at risk.
An agent that monitors prediction market prices has a real-time sensor for:
- Probability of events: "Is this going to happen?" → read the price
- Market consensus: "What does the world think?" → read the price
- Rate of change: "Is this becoming more or less likely?" → read the price delta
- Information flow: "Did something just happen?" → watch for price spikes
